- The
Urban Area of Genoa has a population of about 900,000; the city
covers an area of 243 square kilometres, between the Ligurian Sea
and the Apennine Mountains and stretches along the coast for about
30 kilometres.

Genoa, the Superb, is the city of Doges and Sixteenth century
splendour as well as a place for contemporary culture. It has a
wonderful medieval district with beautiful churches and museum also
with palaces and towers built between the late XVI and the early
XVII centuries and owned by noble families, that are still largely
intact.

Genoa is the city of contrasts: it has Italy’s largest port but
nearby there are crowded beaches in Corso Italia; in terms of the
light, it is dazzling when looking out to the sea from the hills,
dark and slightly threatening in the core of the old town.
-
Genoa surprises people with the height of the buildings and the lack
of the space in the warren of tiny alleyways (“caruggi”) and
narrow cobbled paths (“creuze”) leading uphill and away from
the coast and with the contrasts in terms of colours: the pastel
shades of the facade side with grey and black side.

- The
authentic heart of Genoa is its ancient historical port, Porto
Antico. From where, the mighty city used to exert its control over
the seas, showed its bent for business and trading, started the
discovery of many unexplored of lands. To commemorate the great
exploit by Christopher Columbus, in 1992 the old peers and docks
underwent and important renovation. Author of the restyling was
Renzo Piano, the world renown Genovese Architect.
